What is Tantra?

Many times when I am talking to other Tantikas (those who practice tantra in thier personal life and some have quite a lot of knowledge about tantric traditions and tantric philosophies), we often get around to the question. What is tantra? It seems this a an ongoing question to many Tantric people. How do we explain it to others? The question (What is Tantra?) is just like asking...  What is love? We all have our own definition and our own experience with it. Tantra is very similar. It has many definitions depending on the person.

I was talking with Kate and she mentioned there are 64 arts in Tantric tradition. She mentioned flower arranging, cooking, decorating, and many others including physical pleasure. She said it seems that the practices are physical practices of personal interest. As Kate puts it, whatever your passion is in life, that is your Tantra.

I like Kate's explaination a lot. Many things we do give us pleasure and deep satisfaction in surprising ways, once we open our mind and give ourselves the freedom to embrace a different path -- you've helped me understand that!
